McLaren Showdown: 720S Fights 675LT In Drag, Rolling Races

Is the new hotness able to beat the old king.

The McLaren675LT was the final evolution of the brand’s Super Series models. However, the company eventually replaced it by the 720S. Carwow shows in a new video how much the McLaren has improved over its predecessor.

The 675LT has a 3.8-liter twin turbo V8 that produces 666 horsepower (496kW) and 516 pound feet (700 Newton-meters). McLaren’s new 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 is in the 720S. It produces 710 hp (529 kW), and 568 lbft (770 Nm). Weight is another important difference. The dry 675LT weighs in at 2,711 pounds (1.230 kg), while the 720S weighs in at 2,917 pounds (1.322 kg).

YouTube star Shmee150 owns the 675LT. The only change to the stock car is the addition of a set Trofeo tires that are extremely sticky for track work. After warming the rubber with a burnout he lined up next to the 727S for three tests.

McLaren Showdown: 720S Fights 675LT In Drag, Rolling Races

The first is a quarter-mile drag racing from a standing starting position. Although we don’t want the winner to be revealed, it is true that the results were very close. For most of the distance, they stay side-byside before one of them begins to move ahead. The gap between them is only two-tenths a second at the finish line.

Next, the drivers find out which McLaren is quicker from a 50-mile-per-hour (80-kilometer-per-hour) roll. They then put the cars in their preferred driving modes. This is often for highway cruising. The winner can’t be disputed, so we won’t spoil it. The 675LT is just a solitary victory for the 720S. Shmee says the problem is with the transmission. It is extremely slow to downshift through gears, at least in comfort mode.

They then check the brakes on the cars from a 70-mph roll (113-kph). Again, the results were very close. You can see the video to see if the 675LT wins any of the two remaining challenges, to make up the loss in the first test.
