1966 Ford Mustang may be old, but it still has the Autobahn

Straight to the sun, with the 289 V8.

It’s always fun to drive an old, naturally aspirated, carbureted V8. We would rather do that than an autonomous ride in an electric shuttle on Sundays. It’s a dream come true if it can be done on the Autobahn.

The TopSpeedGermany team had a great time filming the video at the top. We are sure that the end result is stunning. The 1966 Ford Mustang was available to them to test the limits of its speed. The engine is a 4.7-liter two barrel V8, which produces 200 horsepower (149kW) and 282 pound feet (382 Newton-meters).

Most people will agree that driving a muscle car up mountain roads in a vintage V8 engine is not the most enjoyable experience. However, the Autobahn offers miles of roads that are unrestricted and where the Mustang feels at ease. It is amazing how much joy you can feel just by watching the video.

The clip shows the ivory-white Mustang navigating the busy Autobahn traffic at speeds of around 100 miles an hour (160 km/h). Only a handful of modern cars can go faster than the Mustang on the highway, with the fastest speed we could see being 130 mph (210 km/h). As you can see, it’s not the best measuring device and speed cannot be confirmed.

The fuel gauge footage is one thing that we don’t see while watching this video. It would have been interesting to see how fast the V8 engine drains gas from the 16-gallon (60 liter) tank.
