The SUV will fit above the Grand two-row, but below the Wagoneer family.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee has been on the market since the 2011 model year. The SUV has been competitive through two facelifts and many incremental changes, but it must end. These spy photos show that the next generation 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee could be even more impressive – and it will certainly be bigger
A three-row Grand Cherokee was recently spotted without camouflage. These photos give us a good look at the new SUV and confirm our rendering of it.
The headlamps are narrow and set off a forward-leaning grille with a large bumper mounted air inlet, as well as two fog light nacelles. Jeep’s signature feature is the trapezoidal wheel openings. They house lacy wheels that look back to the first-generation Grand Cherokee. You can also see the traditional SUV styling, with its smooth integrated roof rails and front airdam. The narrow taillights run from the quarter panels to hatch. This is likely to make room for third row seats.
This is because the next-generation midsize SUV will have seating for seven people thanks to its extended-length body. The three-row Grand will have the same wheelbase as its two-row counterpart. However, the three-row version will offer more cargo space and a bench in the back. This gives the sport-ute additional utility for those who need to carpool. The three-row Grand Cherokee won’t likely be big enough to fit a family of six or seven. You don’t have to worry if this is you: Jeep will soon offer the body on-frame, Chevrolet Suburban-sized Wagoneer as well as the Grand Wagoneer SUVs.
The Grand Cherokee will be able to compete with the Toyota Highlander, Subaru Ascent and Mercedes-Benz GLE at the lower ends and the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE in the higher trims. The 2022 Grand Cherokee will be able to go off-road, as is normal for anything with a seven-slat grille. The Grand Cherokee now rides on the Giorgio platform, which is also shared with the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. It should offer better on-road performance than its predecessor. However, Jeep’s excellent lineup of four-wheel-drive systems will almost certainly show up underneath the skin.
As the base engine, expect a 3.6-liter V6 from the past to be mated with the TorqueFlite eight speed auto. The turbocharged 3.0-liter Inline-Six will replace the optional 5.7-liter engine. It also has mild-hybrid capabilities. Jeep also offers a plug-in hybrid 4xe powertrain. This uses a 2.0-liter Inline-four engine, which is boosted with a turbocharger, and two electric motors to produce a strong 375 horsepower (280kilowatts), and 470 poundfeet (637newton-meters). The plug-in engine, which is the first to be offered in a Grand Cherokee (at minimum in the US), will still provide plenty of power for the SUV.
A diesel engine will be available; a successor to the SRT or Trackhawk models will also be offered. However, unlike the main 2022 Grand Cherokee lineup expect no big V8s underneath the hood. The new Jeep Grand Cherokee will be available for purchase in the second half 2021.
