You almost ran someone over.
Everyone who drives a manual transmission car does it every day. Those who don’t do it often make fun of those who do. We’re not talking here about putting the car into gear. The obligatory jiggle with the stick is what you need to make sure the car isn’t in gear. If there are distractions in between the jiggle, start-up and jiggle, an additional or jiggle is usually performed. Just to be certain.
The poor person in the video below failed the jiggle test, friends. It’s enough to forget to jiggle your Honda Civic 92, and then have the clutch drop. Then it will lurch in front of your friends. Higher-powered cars are more likely to have this problem, especially older models that lack a clutch interlock switch. Sometimes, they can just fire up and go like a vintage Porsche 911 race car with 500 horsepower flat-12 engine.
This is exactly what happened at Pebble Beach recently. Enorev captured the moment that this Porsche was brought to life unceremoniously in gear. It’s quite terrifying, folks. This startup’s context is not clear. There was a Porsche 917 category at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance this year, and many vintage race cars were on display. Behind the engine cover, the person hiding behind it is kneeling and reaching for the cockpit to announce its engine before it fires up. Porsche is credited with roaring to life and moving forward without a second thought. Yikes.
The 917 took off with a lot of people in front. We suspect the brave individual reaching into cockpit was there for the ride, and it was two seconds that he will never forget. Although we don’t know whether the car crashed on its own, or if he somehow managed to turn it off while holding on to life, we can attest that he was able to get back up and do things correctly the second time. Bravo, sir.
After watching this video, how many people will do the jiggle at most twice when you get into your manual-equipped car?
