The longest and most memorable segment of Top Gear’s last season gets longer.
Top Gear’s last season was a great one. Matt LeBlanc and Ken Block were cruising around London together. It was short.
The BBC has now released this ten minute director’s cut.
Block and his four-wheel-drive, 850 horsepower 1965 Mustang, known as “Hoonicorn”, were dropped off by an army Chinook helicopter in a container at a London haulage yard, where he collects LeBlanc.
After a few hours of stumbling around cranes, trailers, and trains they make their way into the city to take in some sightseeing. While drifting. At 100 miles an hour
This tour includes some of London’s most famous landmarks, such as Canary Wharf and Tower Bridge, St Paul’s Cathedral and the Houses of Parliament. There are many cool spots in between that you won’t see often, such as the tunnels beneath the Lloyd’s Insurance Building. The tunnels that run under Waterloo Station. A tunnel graffiti artists are allowed to paint.
The route is not logical if you are a true Londoner. It randomly switches between the north and the south sides of River Thames. Some locations are also in the wrong order when you travel east to west.
Block’s omission of the Cenotaph, the UK’s national war monument, caused the production to fall apart. The sequence was cut because it was not clear how this was possible.
Although LeBlanc’s presence isn’t essential to the film’s success, it’s still a great ride. It could have easily been Block’s Gymkhana video. He would have had the same leverage with London City Hall and BBC.
Enjoy.
