The upcoming crossover will ride on a front-wheel-drive-based platform.
Romeo has reduced to two models, Giulia & Stelvio, but there will be a much-needed lineup expansion in 2022 when the highly anticipated Tonale is launched. It was first shown in a name-brand concept two and a quarter years ago. Now, it is undergoing final testing. Although the Italian marque has not spoken about the vehicle’s dimensions, spy photos taken by our friend show it next to a Stelvio. Walter Vayr The Tonale will be smaller than the Tonale, but it doesn’t seem that much. For a refresher:Stelvio It measures 4,687 millimeters (184.5 in) long, 1,903mm (74.9in) wide, and 1,648mm (64.9in) high, with a wheelbase of 2,818mm (110.9in). The most noticeable change is the shorter front portion of the crossover. This section has stubbornly remained hidden beneath heavy camouflage to hide the production design.
The two models will have very few in common considering the Stelvio rides on the costly rear-wheel-drive-based Giorgio platform whereas the Tonale will share the Small Wide 4×4 platform with the Jeep Renegade. Stellantis parent company has delayed the market launch due to a plug-in hybrid powertrain. CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato claims that the electric powertrain isn’t sporty enough for the Alfa Romeo brand.
The Tonale will be made in Italy at the Pomigliano d’Arco plant. This gives Alfa Romeo the opportunity to make a profit. Although it might not be the 8C revival and GTV that were teased, a compact crossover has greater chances of improving the firm’s balance sheet once it goes on sale in 2022.
The Stelvio, which is featured here, must not be overlooked. It might have something to offer. Although they aren’t the most stunning wheels we’ve ever seen, these small wheels might be more aerodynamic than others. This could make way for a hybrid version. Although it’s a guess, Alfa is definitely testing something with the prototype.
An even smaller crossover, tentatively named Brennero, will join the Stelvio & Tonale later in the decade. According to rumors, the subcompact model will be made in Poland and available in an all-electric version. Jeep and Fiat are also on the list. Lancia could be able to get these badge-engineered vehicles, as Stellantis has decided to invest in all its brands.
