Roofless Porsche Bergspyder Single Seater Shows Its Wild Side On Video

A conventional windshield was also missing from the Boxster.

It is clear that it was a great week for Porsche enthusiasts, with the Taycan GTS / Sport Turismo GTS as well as the 718 Cayman GT4 RS / GT4 RS Clubsport. Have you got time for another? Although the one-of-one Bergspyder was revealed two years ago by Zuffenhausen, we haven’t heard much about it since.

What is it? It’s a modified Boxster from the previous generation, heavily modified to pay homage to Porsche 909 which weighed 384 kilograms (847 lbs). Although the unique sports car is heavier than most, it is still very light by modern standards. It weighs in at 1,130 kg (2.491 lbs) and is just a bit heavier than the Mazda MX-5 Miata.

YouTuber Supercar Blondie spent time with the Bergspyder, and its absence of a passenger seat. The extreme Porsche concept is also without door handles. The one-seater sports car can still be opened by pulling the strap near the fuel cap. You can still use this door to access the cargo compartment, which is where you would normally find your passenger seat.

As a nod towards Porsche’s 1968 hill climb challenger, you will notice that the windscreen has been replaced with a smaller one. You may be wondering why the driver’s chair looks so familiar. It was borrowed from a 918 Spyder. Some of its dashboard elements were also used in the Boxster, the special 981 generation.

The driving footage shows that it is a fully functional concept car. However, Porsche dropped plans to make a production version of the car because there wasn’t a strong business case. It wouldn’t be difficult to register the Bergspyder internationally, even though it has no roof or windscreen. It’s really a shame, considering that the Boxster was a hardcore machine with a powerful power to weight ratio of almost 2.8 kg (6.1 pounds) and took the 3.8-liter engine with 393 horsepower (289 kW), from the Cayman GT4.

Porsche claimed that it could go from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h), and complete a lap around the Nurburgring in just 7 minutes and 30 seconds. Although that may not seem like much considering how fast the new 718 Cayman GT4 RS did it in 7 mins and 4 seconds. But just think about driving the roofless Bergspyder at maximum speed on the Nordschleife.
