10 of them will be built but they won’t be able to walk on the streets. Maybe.
The original Shelby Cobra was not a heavyweight. The tube frame was made of aluminum and the Mark III Cobras had a 427 cubic inch engine. It weighed in at around 2,400 pounds. The weight of the fiberglass-bodied Cobra kits cars dropped to approximately 2,200 pounds depending on which engine was used.
There’s now a carbon-fiber Cobra.Classic Recreations . The permission has been granted to the company Shelby To build official CSX-numbered Cobra continued cars. While we don’t know how much this car will weigh, we do know that the carbon fiber body is just 2.2 lbs. 88 pounds . This is the whole body. The photos also show the doors and hood. It is stunning, we have to admit.
This is officially called the Diamond Edition Carbon Fiber Shelby Cobra Race Car. Although race is the key word, Classic Recreations’ official press release doesn’t call it a track-only car. It also doesn’t call the special Cobra street-legal. The Diamond Edition Cobra is expected to rival hypercars and offer more comfort and a better driving experience than previous models.
“Carroll Shelby taught my me the importance of pushing the envelope through innovation, passion,” Jason Engel, founder, vice president of design, engineering, Classic Recreations. “A dream of Carroll was to place the highest horsepower engine in the lightest and most agile car possible and it is our honour to have met that challenge.”
Carbon-fiber Cobra will be using a new chassis with modern engineering. No tube frames! The third-generation Ford Coyote V8 will be under the hood. It generates more than 800 horsepower (597 kilowatts), for the rear wheels. Tremec T56 six speed manual transmission handles shifting duties. Six-piston Wilwood brakes are used at each corner when it is time to slow down. This Cobra sounds serious.
It is a serious investment and will not be affordable. There are only 10 of them in production and each starts at $1.2 million
