The VW hatchback is the most popular, but it faces its Spanish counterpart.
These hot hatchbacks are available in a variety of configurations. The Volkswagen Golf R is a top-tier hatchback, I think. The VW Golf top-tier model is not to be snubbed at. So, its slightly more affordable Spanish counterpart, the Cupra Leon, is also available.
Which hot hatch do you think will win straight-line? Although they share the same underpinnings there are some differences. The one is a little more powerful, but heavier than the other. However, both have a front-wheel drivetrain layout.
Carwow compares the two five-doors with the British channel’s drag race to show their differences.
Let’s first compare the numbers before we watch the video. The 2022 VW Golf R is powered by a turbocharged 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine. It produces 315 horsepower (235 Kilowatts) as well as 310 pound-feet of torque (420 Newton-meters). This information is sent to all four wheels which is an advantage in straight-line duel.
The Cupra Leon, on the other hand, uses a slightly less powerful version. It now produces 296 horsepower (221 kW) as well as 295 lbft (400 Nm).
Although the Golf R is more powerful and offers better traction, it is also heavier. It weighs in at 3,417 lbs (1,550 kg) and is significantly heavier than the Cupra Leon’s 3,075 pound (1,395-kg). This is equivalent to two people of average size sitting in the Spanish hatchback.
Are the Golf R’s power, traction and speed giving it an immediate advantage in this race? Is the Cupra’s lighter overall body a factor? You can see the results in the video at the top of this page. Please leave your comments below.
