Tragically, a woman was killed in the accident.
Today’s tragic news comes from one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world. A black car was reported to have been in the Niagara River heading towards the falls, just before noon local time. The car was only 50 yards from the edge and a single woman in her 60s was found. She was later pronounced dead.
The cause of the car’s fate in the river is still unknown. WIVB4 news reports that snow was already falling and roads were slippery when the first reports about the car began to come in. New York State Park Police Captain Christopher Rola spoke to reporters on the spot and explained that due to the rapid current and the water depth at the point in the river, it was impossible to perform a standard water rescue. The U.S. Coast Guard arrived with a helicopter, a rescue diver and to remove the woman. The cause of her death is unknown. She was the only person in the vehicle.
It is believed that the car entered the river through a pedestrian bridge and a vehicle bridge, near the American side’s brink of the falls. The car is currently in the river, but plans for its recovery are being made. WIVB 4 reports that the New York Power Authority had lowered the river’s water level prior to Coast Guard rescue. However, it is unclear if the car might still be over the edge. We are unable to identify the car, as only its roof is visible.
The video at the beginning of this article shows how close the car is from the edge. Local authorities claim that this is the closest vehicle to Niagara Falls.
