A new suspension offers a smoother ride that the original.
This TLC Automotive build is a great choice if you are looking for a classic Toyota Land Cruiser with modern amenities. Although the company is related to Icon 4X4, it focuses exclusively on Land Cruisers and their modifications. Upgrades come with a price, with the 1988 FJ62 costing $175,000.
TLC starts by restoring the Land Cruiser’s frame. Then, TLC rebuilds it even better than the original. The original inline six engine is no longer available. Instead, the 6.2-liter LS3 v8 produces 430 horsepower (321 kilowatts), and 425 pound feet (576 Newton-meters). It is driven by a GM-sourced 4L65E 4-speed automatic transmission.
A 1988 FJ62 had a 4.0-liter inline-six that produced 155 horsepower (116 kW). This build’s V8 has 2.7 times the power of its original counterpart.
TLC claims the suspension on the SUV is from Old Man Emu. The 33-inch BF Goodrich All Terrain KO2 tires offer plenty of grip off-road. Rear disc brakes are now available.
The exterior is almost unchanged, except for the wheels. However, the interior has received many upgrades. New leather upholstery covers the doors and seats. New HVAC controls and heated seats have been added. The dashboard has been redesigned to include an infotainment system and navigation.
TLC was founded by Jamie Ward and Jonathan Ward in 1996. TLC recently opened a 28,000-square foot restoration facility in Harrisburg (North Carolina). Prices for Land Cruiser Restomod Builds start at $125,000
The Land Cruiser has been discontinued in the US despite being upgraded to a new generation. There’s also the Lexus LX, which maintains off-road capability but packs the SUV with more luxurious equipment than the Toyota model.
