A work truck throughout the week and a platform to large truck campers on weekends.
Pickup trucks are a great option for campers who don’t need a dedicated motorhome. A simple solution is to put a camper in the truck bed and then continue using the truck throughout the week. Others opt for a flatbed to better fit larger campers and eliminate the truck bed.
This setup usually requires a flatbed that is custom-built. However, Overland Exploration Vehicles now offers an optional bolt-on option called AlumaTray. The flatbed can be ordered in 6’7″ or 8′ feet lengths. It is suitable for full-size trucks up to one-ton. The aluminum deck has built-in taillights and a headache rack. There are also lower storage compartments underneath the bed. Additional storage is provided by a rear slide-out drawer.
OEV has above-deck side storage available for those who need more storage but don’t want a flat surface. This mirrors the typical pickup bed design. These storage boxes can be easily installed on the back of notched campers and are removable to allow for full-width campers. There are many other options available, such as a folding ladder, provision for a spare tire and gasoline or diesel installation kits. It weighs 700 to 800 pounds depending on its length.
Although the Aluma Tray is a convenient bolt-on option that allows truck owners to transport large campers, it comes with a price. OEV’s website states that the Aluma Tray costs $12,100. This price is for the shorter bed. There’s no mention of the cost for accessories. It’s difficult to argue against the benefits of a bolt-on bed with clever storage options and such versatility.
