Concept We Forgot: 2004 Dodge Sling Shot

America’s original idea for a Smart Roadster was a light and fast two-seat sports car. However, it never made it to production.

It’s a cute, two-seater, roadster with potential. We especially liked the Smart Roadster, which it was better than. The concept was designed to offer “maximum fun, function” and included a rear-wheel drive and rear-mounted engine, a manual gearbox, and four wheel independent suspension. It was also economically efficient, with Dodge claiming that the concept could travel 45 MPG on the highway.

A three-cylinder engine of 100 horsepower provided the motivation. Although it doesn’t seem like much, the car was very light and took around ten seconds to do the 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) task. For those sunny days of open air driving, there were four-wheel disc brakes that stopped the car. The Sling Shot was introduced during the Daimler Chrysler era. Unfortunately, it remained a concept. It would have been a sports car that people could enjoy without spending a lot, much like the cutesy Japanese kei cars like the S660 or the Daihatsu Copen.Dodge might consider a Dodge-based alternative to the now-defunct Viper, which is currently on its deathbed due to low demand. We’re going to briefly remind you of the three latest concepts in  this series: Ford Ghia Focus and Alfa Romeo Bella.
