The Sweptail’s follow-up would keep the company’s “bespoke” design focus.
Luxury at Rolls-Royce could be a combination of exclusivity and luxury. Giles Taylor, Rolls’ chief design officer, stated that the company plans to produce another low-volume car with hand-crafted bodywork “near the future” when he spoke with Autocar attendees at the Geneva Motor Show.
It would be a good idea to continue the amazing Sweptail that was introduced last year. According to Rolls-Royce, the one-of-one car was ordered by a customer and may have been most expensive new car ever.
Taylor stated that the next Rolls-Royce model will also feature hand-beaten body panels. Although there might be multiple examples of the Sweptail, the volume of such models would be very low, possibly in the single digits. He explained that ultra-luxury buyers are looking for something unique, and Autocar agrees.
He told Autocar, “It’s luxury of the future.” “People don’t want what others can get. They want something unique. This is something we’ve put a lot of money into.”
It is important to note that almost all Rolls-Royce models are highly customizable. Rolls officials stated last year that 1,100 to 1,200 customers visit the Goodwood headquarters of the company to design their cars. The company displayed three Phantoms, each with custom paint, artwork, and upholstery. However, a completely bespoke car such as the Sweptail requires more than just personalizing an existing vehicle.
Taylor stated that the future of hand-crafting body panels is going to be more difficult as the automaker has difficulty finding skilled craftspeople capable of doing the work. He suggested to Autocar, however, that “3D printing panels” might be a better option for custom-made models.
Rolls-Royce is not limited to low-volume models such as this. The Cullinan ultra-luxury SUV will be launched soon.
