BMW X8 Production Decision Coming This Year

BMW X8 Production Decision Coming This Year

If the model is approved, it won’t be the same as the X4 or X6.

Although the X7 has not yet been released in production, BMW is already looking at options for adding an SUV to its lineup. Rumours of a possible X8 surfaced back in November 2017, and now more details are starting to surface on the internet about what could be the most expensive vehicle ever made by BMW.

According to sources close to Bavaria, the decision on whether or not to produce the X8 will be made in this year. The luxobarge will receive approval from Munich executives and the road-going model should be ready in a few years. It will compete with the premium SUVs in this segment. BMW must first determine if there is enough demand for such a model for the X8 to be worthwhile. This is why it’s currently evaluating potential interest in an SUV that would be positioned higher than the X7, which will debut later this year.

The X8 is more than a coupe-ified version the upcoming X7. BMW reportedly has other plans for this model if it is approved. BMW Blog reports that the SUV in question will not be an expanded X6 so it won’t have a raked roofline taking up rear headroom. The roofline, which is described as “far more beautiful than any of the existing BMW crossovers”, would give the X8 plenty of headroom back where passengers could enjoy 7 Series levels luxury and comfort.

The production approval of the X8 remains uncertain, but BMW already has plans to produce a four-seat ultra-luxurious X7 with individual rear seats. There may be room for more SUVs in the automotive world. The sky is the limit when Land Rover sells a Range Rover Evoque Convertible, and Volkswagen will do it with the droptop.
