Mercedes-Benz CLA 250e and GLA 250e Comes With 215 HP Of PHEV Energy Mercedes estimates that they will run on electric power for 90 percent of their time The new Mercedes-Benz CLA 250e and CLA250e Shooting Brake increase the model’s powertrain options by adding an electric hybrid powertrain. The vehicles will be made available in Europe starting this spring. However, there is no information yet on North American availability. These models have a combined 1.3-liter combustion engine with an electric motor. The total system output is 215 horsepower (160kilowatts) & 332 pound-feet (332 Newton-meters). An eight-speed dual-clutch transmission is the only option. The battery pack for the hybrid system measures 15.6 kilowatt hours. Mercedes calculates a WLTP range for the CLA 250e at 37 to 43 miles (60 km to 69 km). The CLA 250e Shooting Brake should travel 36 to 42 miles (58 km to 68 km), while the GLA 250e can go 33 to 38 miles (53 to 61km). To make it easier to fit the battery, the PHEV package includes rerouting the exhaust and inserting the fuel tank in the rear axle space. Mercedes claims that this arrangement allows for “only minimal” reduction in rear cargo capacity. Mercedes’ route-based technology is installed on these models. This system evaluates speed limits and navigation data to alter the electric drive mode in order to get the best out of hybrid tech. The system can be forced to prioritize electric power by drivers unless they depress the accelerator sufficiently that the computer determines that a combustion engine is required. According to the automaker, 90 percent of daily driving can be accomplished using only electric power.
