Ford Mustang is still the best-selling sports coupe in the world

Despite sales being down in the U.S. last year, it remains the leader of the global two-door market.

55 years ago today, Ford introduced a new car to the motoring public. It kind-of stayed around. The Ford Mustang, which is still in production today, is the world’s best-selling sports coupe. Ford claims that it has been the most-sold sports coupe for over four years.

Jim Farley, Ford’s president for global markets, stated that Ford broke the mold 55 years ago when it launched the Mustang. Mustang is an iconic symbol of freedom, joy and enjoyment. Nothing can beat the sound of the V8’s roar on a spring day. It’s no wonder that it is the most loved sports coupe in the entire world.

The Mustang was only available to North American buyers for the majority of its lifespan. Ford expanded the Pony Car’s reach to a global market in 2015 with the S550. The world responded. Ford claims that 113,066 units sold worldwide in 2018 were just slightly more than the previous year. Some of this success can be attributed to the launch of a Bullitt.

Blue Oval’s Mustang Team is not content with hugs and puppy love. According to Good Car Bad Car sales figures, Mustang buyers have been steadily declining in the U.S. since 2015. The number of Mustangs sold in the U.S. in 2015 was 122,349, but that number dropped to 105,932 units in 2016 and 81.866 in 2017. The Pony Car’s domestic sales performance was worse last year, with only 75,842 Mustangs finding homes in the United States – the worst in almost a decade.

Ford wants to increase sales by introducing a new entry level performance model. The Mustang GT 2.3L High-Performance Package, which was unveiled just days ago, adds 20 horsepower to the base Pony and offers a variety of suspension upgrades. There are also aesthetic tweaks that will enhance the pony’s appearance. It will be available for purchase in 2020 and is currently on display at the 2019 New York Auto Show.
