It is 23 mm wider than the Mondeo / Fusion and 63 mm taller.
The Ford Mondeo will make its debut in China after several public appearances. The brand’s fifth version of the popular sedan is being presented at the new China Design Center in Shanghai. However, no information is available about availability outside of the People’s Republic.
Ford appears to be particularly proud of the new Mondeo’s design. The entire press release is dedicated to the vehicle’s visual characteristics. It is based on the Progressive Energy in Strength design language of Ford, which you can also see in the Evos as well as the Equator. It was shaped by the needs of local customers and incorporates three core principles: “commanding, agile and responsive.”
The new Mondeo is aggressive and has a front end that looks almost identical to the Evos’. Despite its slightly sloped roofline, the vehicle looks almost like a sedan. The boot lid isn’t attached to the rear windows and there is no rear wiper. The front features a coast-to-coast LED strip that creates a unique light signature. From the side, the sculpted wheel arches create a muscular appearance.
The most striking element at the rear is the pair LED taillights. They have a design that looks like it was inspired by the Mustang Mach E and feature three vertical lines. Although the diffuser attaches to the bumper, it adds a sporty touch. However, the chrome exhaust tips aren’t attached to actual pipes. Side note: The door handles appear to be a Tesla-style pop out design.
Ford does not provide any information on what is happening underneath the hood. However, the badge at the rear indicating a 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged gasoline engine, the 245 badge suggests that it’s there. The inline-four produces 245 horsepower (180kilowatts), which is likely channeled to front wheels via an 8-speed automatic. Ford’s C2 platform is shared with the new Lincoln Zephyr in China.
Ford claims that the new Mondeo will come from Changan Ford. It will be delivered to Chinese customers by 2022. It is not clear if it will only be sold on the Chinese market. However, we expect to know more soon. The fourth-generation Mondeo in Europe is expected to be out of production by March 2012.
