It is exactly what we expected.
After nearly seven years of production, the Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe was discontinued in December 2013. It shouldn’t surprise that the German automaker has a new generation SL which will be morphed into the next-generation AMG GT Coupe. We are pleased to share the first spy photos of this model.
Our spy captured a prototype camouflaged on public roads in Sweden. The camouflaged prototype is hiding underneath the disguise. Although these don’t appear to be production headlights it is likely that we already know how they will look based upon the new SL.
The design of the two cars will differ slightly. According to rumors, the AMG GT Coupe will have a more aggressive design that draws inspiration from the One hypercar. We are not able to see any visual changes due to camo and are eager to find out what lies beneath the thin foil.
The back layout looks very similar to that of the SL, but we suspect there may be some changes to the lower bumper or the diffuser. The SL’s lines are more rounded and softened, while the AMG GT Coupe will have sharper and more edgy forms. The coupe’s overall profile will be nearly identical to that of the roadster, despite having a hard top.
The automaker has not yet provided any information about the powertrain for the AMG GT Coupe. However, it appears that the SL’s 4.0 liter V8 will be available. It could produce up to 585 horsepower (430kilowatts) depending on which trim level it is (55 or 63). An even more powerful, electrically-assisted version of that powertrain could also be in the cards with a mind-blowing output of over 800 hp (588 kW).
