According to the company’s chief tech officer, a “highly emotional EV” is being considered.
Unfortunately, the 600-horsepower BMW Vision M supercar hybrid supercar that you see here never saw production as it was still in concept. The XM model, which is a plug-in hybrid SUV, will arrive in the second half of this year. It will have two-seater coupe styling and will not be as high-powered as the Vision M. The Neue Klasse platform was introduced in 2025. It is possible could eventually lead to a fully-fledged performance machine.
WhichCar sat down with Frank Weber, chief technical officer at BMW. The CTO quickly replied to the Down Under journalists that Bavaria’s lineup was missing a halo vehicle in the same vein of the iconic M1. We can easily imagine a highly emotional model built on the New Class matrix. Although it is not a direct confirmation that the New Class matrix is a genuine supercar, it is better than nothing.
An expensive sports car at a low volume might not be the best decision, especially with BMW spending heavily to decarbonize their lineup. It would however give the German luxury brand an image boost, which many would argue is necessary given recent design decisions.
WhichCar refers to “those in touch” who claim that a flagship car built on the Neue Klasse would have four electric motors in each wheel and only take five minutes to charge. This latter sounds like a pipedream at the moment, but it may one day come true.
Weber stated that a supercar is possible, but a city car, possibly as an i3 replacement vehicle, is not in the plans.
“A new megacity vehicle is not currently in sight,” he said. However, he did mention that the small EV was a glimpse into BMW’s future.
