Sony Mobility must make a decision on the future of its business soon.
Sony’s Sony Mobility division was announced earlier this month at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. This division will examine the possibility of the company entering the electric vehicle market. The Vision-S 02 SUV Concept was used to show the tech company’s intentions. It is now reportedly looking for partners to support its EV operations.
The latest report from Automotive News sheds light on Sony’s plans to enter the growing electric vehicle market. Although it’s too soon to give details about products or launch dates, the Sony Mobility division manager told the publication that the company is aware it must act quickly if the company wants to build a successful electric vehicle business.
Izumi Kawanishi stated that EVs pose a greater risk than the potential benefits. “We know that speed is essential in making a decision.” Kawanishi could not confirm whether a final decision about the future of Sony’s EV company will be made before the end.
The company that makes the PlayStation game console presented an all-electric SUV concept at CES 2022. It can accommodate up to seven people. All-wheel drive is possible thanks to two 268-horsepower (220-watt) electric motors. During the Las Vegas debut, no data were available regarding acceleration or range between the two charges.
Sony partnered internationally with Magna Steyr and Robert Bosch as part of this prototype. Kawanishi stated that new partners will be chosen based on their expertise in EVs without regard to nationality. Other tech companies that are considering entering the EV market include Apple and Foxconn.
