Baja Bugs Shows Off-Road Fun With The VW 23-Window Coach

This is a rare VW Bus with 23 windows.

For those who wish to go off-roading, there are many options. You can choose from the Jeep Wrangler or the Toyota 4Runner. Some people are more adventurous and prefer to drive something other than the road. The more unusual the item, the better.

Volkswagen is not the most trusted brand for off-roaders. The Amarok pickup-up is available in the US, but it is not available here. There are dune buggies, and lifted camper vans that occasionally pop up. Instagram user calivwbus used a rarer and more unusual platform.

Calivwbus is the off-road vehicle of choice, and it’s not an ordinary Bus. A rare 23-window model was transformed into an off-roader with mud tires. This van is not a garage queen. The owner takes it on muddy tracks, deep sandy trails, and snowy trails. Although the van’s body has seen better days, it is possible to say that most people would rather restore something as rare and beautiful than put it to work.

It has a fascinating backstory. It was found in a barn and sat there for more than 30 years until it was finally brought home by its new owner. Other VW Type 2s were available, including a 212-window Deluxe model. The current owner saved the van in 2015 when he was unable to find it. The van has covered 16,400 miles since he bought it in April 2021.

What modifications have been made to the van, other than the big tires? It’s essentially stock, as it turns out. It has a higher ground clearance due to the taller tires. There is no lift kit. The Drive reports it uses a flat-four 1.6-liter engine. It produces about 48 horsepower (35 megawatts). It’s enough power to pull the T2 off the road and skid a few snows, despite its modest output.
