Mercedes-Benz is studying the possibility of releasing “coupe” or long-wheelbase derivatives of its GLS.
Mercedes-Benz seems to be trying to fill every niche, as they are currently looking at new members to expand their already growing range. Wolf-Dieter Kurz, vice-president for product for SUVs, sports cars at Mercedes-Benz, stated that the GLC Coupe, GLE Coupe, and GLE Coupe could be combined with a larger GLS Coupe based upon the upcoming GL facelift. The GLS Coupe will be renamed GLS in order to show the S-Class’s similarity in size. He stated that it would be more practical to release a “coupe version” of a large model like the GLS than a GLA Coupe. Although a final decision has not yet been made, he stated that there is very little chance of seeing a GLA Coupe as it is too small and the sloping roofline would severely impact rear headroom.
In April, Mercedes Sales & Marketing boss Olakallenius stated that the current generation GLS would not receive a Maybach variant. However, Kurz now admits that a more luxurious model, with a longer wheelbase, could be available in this generation. Land Rover has a Range Rover LWB. Mercedes-Benz may also launch a new convertible SUV to expand their range of high-riding models. The regular GLS will continue to be available until then. It should go on sale by December and deliveries will begin in January next year.
