Old school, meet new school.
Icon and Singer have revived our love for classic cars such as the Porsche 911 and Toyota FJ. However, they are equipped with modern features that make them more accessible in 2017. Another company is Mechatronik Engineering, based in Pleidelsheim. Mechatronik decided to focus its efforts on a two-door Benz, instead of off-roaders such as the Toyota FJ or sports cars like Porsche 911.
German shops are currently reworking the W11 coupe. It was originally constructed between 1961 and 1971. The particular example is equipped with a Mercedes-AMG SLK 55-liter V8 engine and running gear. It produces a respectable 360 horsepower (268kilowatts). On its website, the company asks for $464,000 (400,000).
The shop also installed a new ABS brake system, modern chassis and a variety of creature comforts including three-point safety belts inside the cabin. You wouldn’t know from the outside that the engine is AMG-sourced. The shop can even return everything to OEM specs if you wish.
The exterior is finished with a striking jet black paint job and the interior in flawless Cognac leather. Except for the upgraded brakes and engine, nearly everything is original. The steering wheel, radio dial, and even the radio dial are all original. Only 7,020 miles (1,299 km) remain on the odometer. However, it is not clear if those are original miles or miles that were driven after the engine was installed.
This is a stunning restoration, regardless of the circumstances. Singer’s Porsche 911 reimagined at $350,000 and the Icon FJ at just $200,000 make this beautiful Benz a little more expensive, but we think it’s worth it.
