You don’t have to care about your SUV. Take a moment to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
The production of the Range Rover Sport at Jaguar Land Rover Solihull’s Solihull factory, U.K., will be temporarily halted for a period of four weeks starting in late February. Why? Why? Although the Tata Motors-owned automaker believes the all-new Range Rover Sport will revive demand, the next generation of the vehicle is not due to be released anytime soon.
Land Rover has had the second-generation model for almost seven years. It’s no surprise that Land Rover was recently spotted testing its Porsche Cayenne rival. It’s difficult to see the details of the new luxury SUV’s design with camouflage everywhere. However, we are getting the impression it is more evolutionary than revolutionary. The SUV is sending out a little Velar vibe, and may be a little more boxy than usual. However, it’s better not to wait and see other prototypes with less disguise.
We ran the license plate through the U.K. Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency. The only information we were able to find was the date of the first registration, which was October 2019. We noticed that the prototype had a quad exhaust system, and winter tires to handle the snowy roads in northern Europe. The Range Rover rear wiper was hidden under the spoiler on the roof, as is the norm.
Although the exterior styling will remain the same, there will be some major changes underneath. Range Rover Sport’s third iteration will switch to JLR’s new MLA platform. It will be inaugurated with the fully electric XJ flagship sedan that we spotted about a year ago. Thanks to the generous use of aluminum, the new architecture will result in substantial weight savings. This should improve efficiency.
The 2022 Range Rover Sport will be available with a mild hybrid straight-six setup, as it was with the current model in HTMLST guise. An electrified four-cylinder mill may also be in the pipeline. Some believe the smaller powertrain will come from BMW due to a partnership between JLR, the Bavarians and others.
It’ll be a while before Land Rover takes the wraps off this revamped Range Rover Sport. A formal debut is expected to occur sometime in 2021.
