Toyota Boss Announces More Sports Cars

That’s something we’ve heard before. Let’s just wait and see.

Toyota hopes to transform its image from a reliable and boring marque into a modern and youthful brand with the launch of exciting new products like the Supra and Yaris GTRMN. Although this slow process will likely take a while, it could mean that more Toyota-branded sports cars are on the horizon.

Although nothing is confirmed, the boss of Gazoo Racing hinted at more potential additions to its performance lineup. Akio Toyoda, who spoke to Autocar earlier this month at the 2019 North American International Auto Show Detroit, stated that the Supra won’t be Toyota’s last sports car in the next few years.

“SUVs are great, but at the end the day isn’t there anything better than an agile rear-wheel-drive sportscar? He said that he hoped this wouldn’t be the last Toyota sportscar you see from him in the future, shortly after the Supra’s debut.

There have been rumors in recent months about successors to the Celica or MR2. However, it is more likely that Toyota will launch its sports car offensive with GR versions the GT86, Yaris and the new Corolla Hatch. This version will be powered by a 2.0-liter turbo engine that produces around 250 horsepower (186kilowatts).

The new offerings will be on the market as soon as the executives at the automaker give their approval to expand the GR sports car range. The modular TNGA platform makes it much easier to develop new bodies with different performance parameters. The manufacturer hopes that the TNGA will allow for a reduction in development time.
