This is the only way to get a Sable two-door drop-top Sable.
We ask you to suspend disbelief for a moment and enjoy a time when Mercury Sable was cool. Anybody over 30 years old can probably recall enough about the 1980s to understand that this car was not only cool but also futuristic and amazing. We don’t recall anyone asking if it could be ridden in a convertible.
Evidently, someone did. It was not only a person with some influence in the automotive industry. This 1989 Mercury Sable was not built by a sloppy schmuck with too many spare hours and a sawzall. It is a Ford concept car, built specifically for the SAE International Congress and Expo in 1989. Cars & Concepts, Brighton, Michigan, handled the heavy lifting. This is a drop-top Sable with a hard tonneau covering that protects the large roof when it’s down.
Unfortunately, the Craigslist listing for this car does not offer much history. However, if you look at Ford–Taurus.org, the car somehow escaped the crusher and was given a special VIN which allowed it to be registered and titled. It uses the same rear suspension as the Sable wagon to handle the extra weight of the convertible components. This also makes it easier to accommodate the roof. It was built on a four-door Sable chassis. However, custom body panels were made and the front doors were extended by one foot to make it a two-door.
Although the current ad doesn’t mention ownership history, it has only 9,800 miles on its odometer and was stored for most of its life. The car is being offered for sale in Austin Texas. It’s likely that the seller manages a local dealership. This car is unique and the asking price of $15,900 seems reasonable. We will ignore any suggestion that the car could be worth $400,000 in anycircumstances. This is especially because the seller doesn’t seem motivated enough to take decent photos of it.
It is undeniably amazing that the car exists at all, despite the hard work it took to build it. The car is worth only what the owner is willing to pay. Unique doesn’t necessarily mean valuable or desirable. Although we don’t find this strange creation to be ugly, the proportions clearly indicate that this platform wasn’t intended to be a topless 2-door. We are confident that there is a buyer for this piece of Blue Oval history.
