Land Rover announced that they are looking into the possibility of releasing a SVR version, a top-of-the-line Defender.

Gerry McGovern, company’s design chief, dropped some hints in an interview with British magazine Auto Express about a hot version the legendary off-roader that would be directly competing with the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG. Special Vehicle Operations (SVO), who is also believed to be responsible for Defender SVX, an off-road version of the model, will develop it if the project is approved for production.

The next generation Defender will go on sale in 2018. A luxurious SVA version could be added to the Range Rover SVAutobiography or the upcoming Range Rover Evoque SVAutobiography. McGovern stated that the new Defender will include at least three models, while a previous report indicated that there would be five: a short wheelbase two door with metal roof, a short wheelbase fourdoor with soft roof, a long-wheelbase four-door pickup, and a short wheelbase fourdoor pickup.

Last note: Land Rover will cease making the Defender this year. However, the model could continue to be made outside Europe.
