Ford broke a Mexican record in December 2017.
For the past four years, the Ford Mustang was the best-selling sports coupe. With the release of the Shelby GT500 we expect the Pony Car will retain its title in 2019. Ford’s decision last year to make the Mustang more accessible to the global market was a huge success. There were 113,066 Mustangs sold worldwide. Mustangmania is so strong in Europe that Mustang owners from across the continent came together in Belgium to form the largest parade of Mustangs.
Ford’s Lommel Proving Ground hosted a Mustang meeting on September 7. There were 1,326 Mustangs representing all generations. The cars were driven in a continuous convoy of no more than 20 m between each other to set a new official record. To celebrate the 55th anniversary of the sports car, the final act of celebration was special choreography. On December 3, 2017, 960 Mustangs from all generations joined together in Toluca, Mexico to set the previous record for largest Mustang queue.
Why did Ford choose Belgium to host the record attempt? Two main reasons. The first is that the Lommel Proving Ground, owned by the company, has enough space to hold all the cars. It boasts 50 miles (80 km) of tracks. More than 100 employees from the proving grounds volunteered to serve as marshals. Another reason is that Mustangs are sold per head in this country more than in any other European country. Ford sold over 5,500 Mustangs in the Old Continent within the first six months.
