Italdesign Teases DeLorean Reboot with Gullwing Doors

According to the DeLorean Motor Company, the new model features an electrified powertrain.

Italdesign, which designed the look for the original DeLorean DMC-12 has released a teaser to show its involvement in the revival of the iconic vehicle. The current version of the DeLorean Motor Company doesn’t provide any details. It promises that the car will be revealed later in the year. The website allows interested people to sign up for updates on the project.

The dark teaser shows how the doors open. The vehicle’s silhouette is evoked by the V-shaped element at the center of the front.

Only a small glimpse of the new model’s powertrain is available on DeLorean’s website. The company says it is on a “journey towards electrification.”

Italdesign published a teaser image in January 2021. The DeLorean’s silhouette was also shown with the doors of the vehicle open. The DMC emblem was also visible, which was a subtle distinction.

These teasers seem to have softer lines than the original. The area around the fenders is less angular. The door panels are also more curved.

Italdesign Giugiaro created the iconic DeLorean look. Giorgetto Giugiaro, the founder of the company, was known for creating wedge-shaped cars in 1970s and 1980s. This look was also used on the Lotus Esprit and Maserati Bora cars, Merak, as well as the first-gen Volkswagen Scirocco.

Although its design is well-known, the original DeLorean product was an utter failure. Only 1981 and 1982 saw production.

This is not the first attempt to revive DeLorean. The current owners of the company started hand-building a few new examples in 2007. Now, it’s 2017 and another attempt was made to assemble the machine from original parts. There were enough parts to make at least 300 of them.
