Doug DeMuro races his Ford GT against the Ultra-Rare Classic GT40

Generation gaps of decades have been bridged to the road.

It is rare to find a Ford GT40 on the road. However, the Mark III GT40 is one of the most rare classic GT40s. Only seven examples were made, and only four of them have the left-hand steering wheel. One of these four examples is now in the possession of the Petersen Automotive Museum.

This video uploaded by the museum’s YouTube channel shows that an ultra-rare GT40 is allowed to race on a drag strip. Who is the challenger? Doug DeMuro will be driving the American sports car in a drag racing.

Yes, we understand. You probably already know the outcome of the matchup, even though you didn’t see the video embedded at the top. Here are the numbers to show the modern competitor’s advantage.

The Ford GT40 Mark III is powered by a 4.7-liter V8 that produces 306 horsepower (228kW) and is mated with a 5-speed manual gearbox. There isn’t much technology in this car, but it has a significant advantage over the 2005 GT, which weighs in at around 800 pounds more.

DeMuro’s 2005 Ford GT is powered by a supercharged, 5.4-liter V8 with over 600 horsepower (with ECU and pulley upgrade). It is connected to a 6-speed manual transmission. The huge output gap is evidently its advantage. However, it’s important that DeMuro is nervous when racing against a classic car that costs approximately $2.5 million. We know the results but you will still be watching this video because it is a GT40. This rare event is just as rare as the car.
