The Golf R of the Future?
As automakers still prefer SUVs to all other vehicles, electric hot hatchbacks are not yet available. Renault tried to make an EV hatch faster in 2017, with the Zoe Esport Concept, which featured all-wheel drive thanks to a dual motor setup that produces 460 horsepower. We are hopeful that the Volkswagen ID.X concept will make things easier for us.
The CEO of Volkswagen’s Passenger Cars division unveiled the one-off. It follows the same formula as the French and packs two electric motors, while losing a lot more weight than the normal. Ralf Brandstatter claims it is 200 kg (441 pounds) lighter than the standard production model, despite having an electric motor mounted in the front. This makes the ID.X an all wheel-drive layout. The performance-oriented concept is based on bits and pieces of the ID.4 GTX. It produces 329 horsepower (245 Kilowatts) combined. It is a little more powerful than other MEB-based compact VW Group offerings, such as the ID.4 GTX and China’s ID.6.
The ID.X can sprint from 62 mph to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds. This is two seconds faster than the regular rear wheel-drive ID. Ralf Brandstatter claims the concept was designed with a drift mode similar to the new-generation Golf R. The other changes include a lower suspension, large wheels with low profile tires and neon accents both inside and outside.Unfortunately, ID.X will be a concept at this time. Brandstatter states that the company will “take up many ideas” and incorporate them into future production models. Although it is possible that an ID.3 with dual motors, AWD and AWD will be produced in the future, it seems like it will take some time.
