What would you do with a rare car?
The Porsche 911 Carrera, 3.2 Speedster was produced only from January 1989 to July 1989. This resulted in just 2,104 units. Volker Schiersch seems to not care about the rarity of his Speedster, as he uses it to transport a small camper across Europe. This is the way to travel with style, not the 911 with its rooftop camper.
Schiersch bought his 911 Speedster many years ago, as the latest addition in a long line Porsche owners. He said that the car was “perfect” and that the Silver Metallic paint finish was more rare than Guards Red or Black. The sound of an air-cooled six cylinder boxer engine is what I find most beautiful. It is pure joy to drive a Speedster. Driving is a skill that requires you to be alert. I also enjoy being part of the action.
Due to the fiberglass nacelles between the front seats, the Carrera 3.2 Speedster can only be used as a two-seater. Porsche does not intend to use the roof for any emergency. The simplified layout saved 154 pounds (70 kg) over the 911 Cabriolet of the same period.
Schiersch’s Speedster has a trailer hitch that is genuine Porsche accessory. He uses it to attach a 1975 Hymer Eriba Puck camper on the back. The custom Porsche 980 Silver Metallic paint is applied to the rig. A 911 Targa was his previous tow vehicle.
Schiersch used to travel longer distances, but now he only uses the camper when visiting his grandchildren, Dusseldorf and Osnabruck in Germany. He still has his sights set on a larger trip. He told Porsche that he might drive to Salzburg once again.
