Ford has a new pickup in the works that will fit below the Ranger.
Rumours of a compact Ford pickup date back at least to mid-2018. We thought it would ride on a fourth-generation Focus platform, and wear the Courier name. There have been many changes since then. Even the most recent reports contradicted earlier ones. We now know that it will likely sport the Maverick name. We thought it was high time to show you what the new pickup will look like once it arrives, with leaks joining the rumor mill.
The renderings were based on a leak image of the truck’s stamped tailgate. This matches the May computer rendering, which further supports Ford’s new pickup design. It won’t, however, share many components with the Bronco Sport. It will instead share components with the transit connect van. This includes the engine. The 2.0-liter naturally aspirated mill produces 162 horsepower (121 megawatts).
A turbocharged 1.5-liter three cylinder engine producing 180 horsepower (132 kW) could be made available following the Maverick’s launch. A six-speed manual transmission is also possible. However, an eight-speed automatic is the most likely choice. It will be below the Ranger Ford’s lineup and have a shorter bed. Rumours say it will be 2 feet shorter than the Ranger’s which measures from 61 to 72.8 inches.
These renderings depict a four-door pickup that has a clamshell roof and a short bed. The design is very Ford Explorer Sport Trac-esque. Ford also has the option to add another pickup to its ranger. According to rumors, the Dearborn-based automaker plans to produce around 100,000 units in the Maverick’s inaugural year. This is quite an ambitious goal. Ford must reveal the details before it can go on sale. It is unlikely that either of these things will happen until 2021 or 2022.
