Mazda CX-60 Gets 323 HP as Brand’s First Plug In Hybrid

In pure electric mode, it can travel 63 km (39 mi)

Mazda has launched the 2023 CX-60 SUV for Europe, Japan and other markets. It looks very familiar but it is actually a brand new model. The Skyactiv Multi Solution Scalable Architecture rear-wheel-drive underpinnings make this model unique. This is the first ever plug-in hybrid model by the firm and features the iActiv AWD setup primarily driving rear wheels.

The first PHEV version of the 2.5-liter gasoline engine will hit the market. It combines an electric motor with a naturally aspirated gasoline engine. Mazda claims that the combustion engine produces 189 horsepower (141kW) at 6,000 RPM and 261 Newton-meters (193 pounds-feet), of torque starting at 4,000 RPM. The electric motor has been rated at 134 horsepower (100 kW) & 250 Nm (269 lb-ft). The e-Skyactiv produces a respectable 323 hp (241 kW), and 500 Nm (369 lb.ft) when combined.

The Mazda CX-60 is part of the newly created “Large Product Group” and will accelerate to 62 MPH (100 km/h), in just 5.8 seconds. Electronically, it will be limited to 124 mph (200 km/h), when used as a PHEV or at 87 mph (135 km/h), with the ICE off. The 17.8-kWh lithium-ion battery pack is capable of running at zero emissions and can travel up to 63 km (39 miles) in the WLTP combination cycle.

The Mazda CX-60 measures 4,745 millimeters (186.8 in) long, 1,890mm (74.4in) wide and 1,670mm (65.7in) high, with a wheelbase of 2,870mm (113 in). It is slightly larger than the FWD-based , which was only available in North America. The next CX-70 will have a larger body, but still have two rows.

Weight is always an issue when discussing PHEVs. The Mazda CX-60 weighs in at 2,070 kg (4,564 lbs) on the 20-inch wheels, or slightly less at 2,055 kg (4.530 lbs) with base 18-inch alloys. Technically, it’s the unladen weight. This includes a 75-kg (165-lb) driver and fuel tank (with 50 Liters or 13.2 Gallons in this instance).

The CX-60 is finished in a new Rhodium White Premium Metallic Paint. It has a long, hood that can accommodate longitudinally mounted engines. The PHEV will be built around the four-cylinder unit. Inline-six gasoline engines and diesel engines will follow. The e-Skyactiv X is the first, with a displacement of 3.0 liters and the second, with a displacement of 3.3 liter Skyactiv D. Both were developed using 48-volt mild hybrid tech to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

The new eight-speed automatic transmission features a multi-plate clutch that replaces the hydraulic torque converter. All three powertrains can be used with this newly designed transmission. The PHEV’s electric motor is integrated into the transmission. It works directly on the input shaft, allowing for faster response. It can be charged at 7.2kW once you run out of battery power, although Mazda doesn’t say how long. Regenerative braking is supported, we know that.

The interior feels very luxurious and echoes Mazda’s intention to become a luxury brand. This is a clear indication of the industry’s tendency to use fewer buttons, but you don’t have to go overboard with all the physical controls. The infotainment has not been fully integrated, so you can still use the 12.3-inch touchscreen and the rotary knob to control it. The diagonal of the digital instrument cluster is the same as that of the main display.

The CX-60 will be sold in Germany by Mazda in the Prime, Exclusive, Homura and Takumi trims. Prices range from EUR47,390 up to EUR52,890. You can also get the white paint for an additional EUR950. You can also get options like a panoramic roof, a driver aid package, and a leather upholstery convenience & audio package depending on the trim.

Within the next two-years, it will be followed by a larger, 3-row CX-80. This is being earmarked for the US as the widebody CX-90.
