Genesis GV80 and Other Models Are Losing Advanced Safety Technology Due to Chip Shortage

These features are also lost on the Genesis G80, GV70 and GV70.

Due to the continuing shortage of microchips, the Genesis G80 and GV70 will not be available temporarily with Highway Driving Assist II advanced driver assist suite. These models will instead receive the standard version of Highway Driving Assist. The Monroney pricing sheet for affected vehicles will give buyers a $200 credit. Edmunds first to report on the issue.

Highway Driving Assist II is not yet available. We are unable to confirm the length of the change at this time. “We look forward to bringing the enhancements back into the Genesis lineup as soon possible,” Jarred Pellat, a Genesis spokesperson, told Motor1.com.

Highway Driving Assist II’s machine-learning component is temporarily unavailable. It is this part that distinguishes Highway Driving Assist II and the regular version. This tech is used to adjust steering feel based upon driver behavior and make driver-initiated changes to lane.

This change will mean that the G80, GV70 and GV80 won’t be available with:

Forward Collision Avoidance Assist (FCA) enhancements:

  • Junction Crossing
  • Lane-Change Oncoming or Side
  • Evasive Steering Assist
  • Lane Change Assist

Smart Cruise Control (SCC), enhancements

  • Reduced-In Response
  • Machine Learning
  • Lane Following Assist w/ Offset Driving

Standard Highway Driving Assist includes a forward collision avoidance system that can detect pedestrians and cyclists. It includes lane departure warning and lane-keep assistance, lane following assist, blind spot collision avoidance aid, safe exit assist, smart cruise control, and lane-following help.

Highway Driving Assist II was a standard feature on the G80/GV80. To get the tech for GV70, buyers had to select an option package or upgrade the engine.

The auto industry is not alone in reacting to chip shortages by temporarily removing features from cars. Cadillac took Super Cruise out of the 2022 Escalade because there was not enough parts. The availability of the advanced driver assist tech for the 2022 CT4 sedans was also delayed by Cadillac.

Jeep also had to take the Quadra Liftt air suspension out of the Grand Cherokee L. Another example is BMW which removed the touchscreen functionality on several models and offered a $500 credit.

According to estimates from last year, the shortage will improve in 2022 or 2023. Recent reports indicate that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine could make things worse due to the decreased supply of neon.
