2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz Launches Today: Watch The Livestream

The livestream will begin at 12 PM Eastern/ 4 PM GMT/ 6 PM CEST.

The unveiling of the Santa Cruz by Hyundai at the Detroit Auto Show in 2015 took everyone by surprise. Hyundai wanted to appeal to “millennial lifestyles” as well as “urban adventurers”. The pickup has become a production model six years after its debut. Yes, Hyundai is making compact trucks and will unveil it before Ford’s Maverick.

As the Korean brand’s design has evolved dramatically over the years, it is no surprise that the Santa Cruz road-going model will look very different from the original. Hyundai has released teasers that describe the exterior of the Hyundai Tucson. Hyundai’s marketing language used to describe the concept many moons back will still be applicable for the production version. The Santa Cruz’s bed is small. The pickup is a compact unibody truck, so it shouldn’t be expected to be called a workhorse. It will only be capable of light loads.

Hyundai actually says it’s not a truck but a Santa Cruz. This implies that it will be in its own segment. The not-a-pickup, which was designed in California and built in Alabama, will feature all-wheel drive and “powerful and efficient” engines. It will most likely follow the Tucson’s lead inside, as we expect the two to be in close proximity in many ways. It is likely that it will only be available in the double-cab body style as that would make most sense. The 2015 Santa Cruz concept (pictured above) featured rear-hinged suicide doors. While those doors looked great and appropriate for a show truck, the production model will have regular-sized rear doors. The Santa Cruz will be available in the United States shortly after today’s world premiere.
