Ford To Build A Second EV Based On Volkswagen's MEB Platform

It is the “Sport Crossover”, teased earlier today.

In July 2019, Ford announced a partnership expansion with Volkswagen. The Blue Oval company will receive an electric vehicle built on the VW MEB platform. The zero-emissions crossover will be made in Cologne and will make its debut next year. In an official press release, the automakers confirmed that a second MEB-based EV had been added.

Ford today announced its electrification strategy for Europe. Three new electric vehicles will launch by the brand from 2024 to join the already-available Mustang Mach1_ and Mustang Mach1_ GT. It will debut as a mid-sized crossover later in the year, with a launch for the market in 2023. This will be Ford’s version the Volkswagen ID.4

Ford will soon launch a new battery-powered crossover a year later. Although it’s not possible to predict what this model will look like, this announcement confirms previous reports that Ford would be receiving its own version the Volkswagen ID.5 GTX. The new Ford crossover will be made in Cologne. It is currently being called “Sport Crossover”.

Ford currently works on an all-electric Puma as the third new EV. This cute crossover is available in Europe with a variety of mild-hybrid engine options. The zero-emissions version will be made in Ford’s Craiova plant, Romania in 2024. Ford will make the Transit Courier and Tourneo Courier as electric vehicles in the commercial division by 2024.

Ford and Volkswagen have extended their agreement, allowing Ford to increase its MEB-based electric vehicle production to 1.2 million units in six years. Previously, Ford had planned to sell 600,000. EVs based upon the Volkswagen electric vehicle architecture. Expanding the partnership means more income for Volkswagen based on existing technologies.
