But, will Audi make it?
Audi is not unfamiliar with building fast station wagons. The Ingolstadt RS wagons have been a hit, despite not being the first to develop the idea. The RS6 Avant, which finally arrived in the USA in 2020, is the most recent.
Audi is also exploring the market for performance electric cars, as shown in a few etron models. The RS e-Tron GT is a shining example. This four-door, low-slung coupe can produce 637 horsepower (475kilowatts) in just three seconds and can sprint from 0-60 mph in about three seconds.
Audi has recently presented a number of concepts that show what the future electric versions of its A6 Avant and A6 Avant could look like. These models have a lot of potential for performance. The Avant e-Tron Concept has 469 horsepower (350 kilowatts), and 590 poundfeet (890 Newton-meters) torque.
With this in mind, Audi could build an RS version the A6 Avant e-Tron. In a recent interview with Top Gear, Oliver Hoffmann, chief operational officer and head for technical development at Audi, answered this question. Hoffmann stated, “It’s clear to me that an electric A6 must also include some performance versions.”
Hoffmann says, “In 2025, we will present a totally new generation of ICE vehicles, from mild-hybrids up to plug-in hybrids, with increased electric ranges and greater power. This will also be the foundation for our upcoming RS line of models. Parallel to our ICE portfolio, we will also have performance versions of our ICE platforms and some performance models based upon our EV platforms.
Hoffmann suggests that Audi is capable of making an electric RS6 Avant, even though it’s not a firm “yes”. Although there is not a clear timeline, Hoffmann indicated that electric (or electrified!) RS models will be available sooner than expected based on his answers.
Audi targets a 2023 launch of the liftback sedan, and 2024 for Avant.
