Polestar 1 Officially Launched With 600 HP and a 93-Mile Electric Range

China will build the hybrid coupe with a carbon fibre body starting in mid-2019.

Polestar’s first production car has been unveiled just minutes after it dropped a final Teaser. The Polestar 1 is a stunning two-door coupe. It is inspired by the 2013 Volvo Concept Coupe in terms of design and partly based on the SPA platform that underpins the large “90” series cars as well as the new XC60. The hardware comes from Volvo’s SPA, while half of it is a collaboration between Polestar and Volvo for this product.

This is a more powerful coupe version than the S90 Sedan. Especially when you consider that the four-seat Polestar 1 has an extra ace in its sleeve for powertrain. This powerful hybrid configuration produces 600 horsepower and 737 pound feet (1,000 Newton-meters of torque) of power.

Polestar also noted that the battery pack, which is unspecified, can provide enough power for a staggering 93 miles (150 km) of electric travel. This makes Polestar proud to state that the coupe has the longest range electric hybrid. Carbon fiber is used to reduce weight and improve torsional stiffness. It features an electric axle that has torque vectoring capabilities to improve handling and power delivery to the road.

Although performance numbers have not yet been released, it is clear that these will outperform the Volvo S90 in its range-topping T8 specification. The hybrid sedan takes 5.2 seconds to complete the sprint from 0-60 mph (0-100 km/h) and reach a top speed at 155 mph (253 kph). The Polestar 1 Coupe is expected to be significantly faster and more efficient with its 200 horsepower and 265 lbft (356 Nm) more than the sedan.

It will not be on the roads immediately, but we will need to wait. The company claims production will begin in the middle of 2019, at a new factory in Chengdu. This will be finished by mid-2018. A smaller model, called Polestar 2, will be introduced to the lineup to compete with the Tesla Model 3. It will also serve as the Volvo Car Group’s first fully electric vehicle. A Polestar 3 SUV will be available later in the process.

The group will introduce 5 EVs between 2019 and 2021. Some will sport the Polestar badge, while others will bear the Volvo logo. Volvo and Geely, the parent company of Polestar, have announced plans for a total investment of 640 million euros (around $752M).

The coupe is available for purchase now. The company is currently working on dedicated showrooms called “Polestar Spaces”.
