2022 VW Golf R with 520 HP Hits 200 MPH on Pitch-Black Autobahn

Tuner unlocks supercar speeds to make hot hatches even more hot.

So, we’ve already seen two high-speed runs on the Autobahn with the Volkswagen Golf 8, so why is there a third? Because this compact hatchback is not your average Wolfsburg car. The 1.5 TSI and 2.0 TDI models were previously the most popular, but now we can see the R flexing its muscle on a section of Germany’s magnificent highway.

The 2.0 TSI engine has seen a significant increase in power and torque. A stage 2 kit by HGP has increased the four-pot’s output to 520 horsepower (387 kilowatts), and 629 Newton-meters (464 pound feet) respectively. To handle the additional power generated by the EA888 Evo4 engine, the tuners fitted large ceramic brake discs measuring 380mm at the front axle.

The car was able to stretch its legs on the Autobahn late at night, when there was less traffic, in order to put these impressive output numbers to the ultimate test. It’s impressive to reach 325 km/h (202 MPH) considering that it’s still a four-cylinder Golf. It took 7.53 seconds to get there (from 62 to 124 MPH (100 to 200 km/h)).

The Golf R by HGP has had many modifications to unlock speeds normally associated with supercars. The hyper hatch is now a bit of a sleeper, thanks to the custom turbocharger and K&N air filters as well as a Wagner intercooler.

The only signs that it has been modified, aside from the stickers by the tuner, are the 19-inch OZ wheels and Pirelli P Zero tires. Also, the KW coilover suspension. Although it’s sad that the five-cylinder Golf R was not equipped with the Audi RS3 engine, the aftermarket scene has the potential to provide a viable alternative.

Many will recall that the same tuning company extracted almost 1,000 horsepower from a Lamborghini Urus. The Italian Super SUV ran the sprint in 2.9 seconds at 211 mph (340 km/h).
