It is a family matter.
The Mercedes AMG E63 S sedan as well as the wagon had their big debuts yesterday. They received the usual mid-cycle updates. The parts that made the E63 S so dynamic remain unchanged, including the updated front and rear fascias and new headlights. Here’s why.
Mercedes could have produced more horsepower in the 2021 update. However, the wagon and sedan still retain 603 horsepower and 627 pounds-feet respectively. This is a good thing considering other AMG products are increasing their power. The GT63S 4Door is the most powerful. It features the same twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter V8 engine as the E63 but has 630 horsepower and 664 poundfeet.
Drummond Jacoy, Mercedes-AMG Director for Overall Vehicle Development, stated that the emphasis was on driving abilities. He spoke to Motor1.com during a conference call with other media. We were extremely happy with the engine size, and driving characteristics. We have a car line-up, and the GT63 S is above it. We don’t want any overlap so we made the GT63 S the exclusive power source.
So there you go. There was certainly room for improvement, maybe via Mercedes-AMG’s highly acclaimed EQ Boost technology. The AMG HTML63 has the 48-volt mild hybrid rig that works great with its twin-turbo 4.0 liter. This model packs an E63-matching 603 hp, 627 lbft and packs an E63-matching 603 hp. However, EQ Boost is largely exempt from turbo lag. The lack of this system is due to packaging issues.
“The E63 is unique in its characteristics. Jacoy stated that we need [launch control], and very precise shifting. An electromechanical clutch is used instead of a torque converter to achieve that.
EQ Boost uses a combination of a torque converter and an integrated starter-generator. One cannot have the other. “We are limited by package space so we chose to keep the original powertrain in its current configuration. The ISG was impossible to fit in the vehicle.
In a world that is constantly updating vehicles with more power, the absence of EQ Boost and even a large power increase may seem disappointing. The reality is that the E63 can sprint to 60 in 3.2 seconds and reach 186 mph top speed. It is quite good enough without any extra power.
