GM shares Cadillac Sports Car Sketch with C8 Corvette Overtones

This sketch was posted on the official GM Design Center Instagram account.

We have not heard anything about Cadillac making a sports car that is based on the Chevrolet Corvette. We haven’t heard any hint, suggestion or rumors about a Cadillac sports car based on the Chevrolet Corvette. You know what? It’s great to see that someone at General Motors Design is even thinking about it.

This racy red Caddy is from GM Design on Instagram. If you can instantly spot shades of Corvette within the shape, then you are not the only one. We had the idea right away and others shared the same sentiment. It looks ready to compete with the Audi R8 in the luxury mid-engine market, from the front fascia design and its angles and vents, to the large rear fenders.

Or does it? This head-on view is more interesting when viewed from a different perspective. As you would expect from a mid-engine car, the hood looks shorter because of its widebody. The hood may appear shorter depending on how you look at it, which could indicate a front-engine vehicle that has a very short deck. This theory supports the possibility that this is a front-engined Caddy coupe. It doesn’t really matter. It doesn’t matter if the car is front-engined or mid-engined. Or if it has been completely de-engineered to make way for electric motors. It would be awesome if Cadillac made it.

Cadillac performance enthusiasts know that it is possible to build a luxury coupe using Corvette DNA. The XLR was introduced for the 2004 model year. It was built using the bones of a C6 Corvette and Cadillac’s Northstar V8 motor. You could choose between an automatic or manual transmission. It was supercharged to 443 horsepower (330 kilowatts) in XLR-V spec. Production didn’t last long, however. With just over 15,400 units built, the last XLR was completed in 2009.

Although there is no reason to believe that a Corvette-based Cadillac will soon be available, the luxury division has a sleek, midengine Cadillac in its plans. Because it is a race car, it can only be driven on the streets. Cadillac is developing a new GTP racecar that will compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The car will be powered by a hybrid engine. Little else is known. The front was revealed in a teaser announcement, which showed corner vents that look very similar to the ones on this sketch.
