Mercedes cannot hide the charge port door at the rear bumper.
Mercedes is expected to offer the AMG GT Coupe in a range of powertrain options. Although it will have a V8 engine the most powerful version of the car will be the plug-in hybrid that our spy photographers captured for the first time. Mercedes camouflages the car, but can’t conceal the charge port door at the rear bumper.
Photos show the charge port door partially highlighted in yellow. It is located between the taillights and exhaust pipes. The AMG GT is a sister to the SL in the Mercedes range, while spy shots from earlier times have shown the roadster being tested with a plugin hybrid powertrain.
Mercedes will likely pair its twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter V8 engine with an electric motor. Similar setup was used in the GT63 S E Performance, which produced 831 horsepower (620 Kilowatts) as well as 1,033 poundfeet (1.400 Newton-meters). We expect similar results from the new GT.
Previous spy photos had shown the “43”, “53”, and “63” versions of the model. This suggests a range of possible powertrains. The hybrid could offer different outputs. Rumours suggest that a 700-hp (521-kW), SL variant could be developed to produce an AMG GT twin.
Mercedes attempts to conceal the GT’s design with a wrap and some cladding. However, it appears that the two-door model will continue the evolution of the existing model’s styling. Mercedes may differentiate the hybrid GT by using a unique front fascia. However, this is an area Mercedes excels at hiding.
Although the AMG GT Coupe will be the first to launch, we hope to break cover by the end of this year, nothing is certain. We don’t think the plug-in E Performance version of the GT will be revealed by Mercedes until 2023, even if it is.
Mercedes’s lineup is expanding in many directions as it shifts towards electrification. However, that transition is still years away and the company isn’t abandoning the combustion engine just yet. The future of a plug-in hybrid coupe featuring a V8 engine and 700 hp sounds exciting before the EVs overtake everything.
