Although the automaker has not confirmed this, it isn’t a “no” at this time.
Officially, the Subaru WRX STI has been discontinued. Subaru Australia has apparently considered making its own WRX STI.
A Subaru spokesperson gave a hint of hope during an interview with Driver. However, don’t be too optimistic – Subaru is still “a bit coy” about the possibility of an Australia-exclusive performance version.
“We always listen to our customers. The representative said that there are many discussions with Subaru Corporation, STI and other parties.
He said, “We are delighted to have a variety [of STI enhancements] to launch, but we will need to be a little coy about what’s on the cards for future.”
Drive Then, he asked a follow up question that should ignite a little yearning for new WRX STI hopefuls. “So not a no’ then?”
The representative said, “Not a no,”
With this report, we believe there is a future for a new WRX STI. Subaru Australia is not the first to use an STI tune that is endemic in its market.
This should be taken with a grain of salt. If Subaru or Subaru Australia doesn’t confirm it, then nothing is definitive.
Subaru Corporation announced in March that a new WRX STI based upon the current platform was not possible. They cited the rapidly changing regulations as the primary reason. Although the automaker did not provide details on the future of the STI, it stated that it was “exploring possibilities for the next-generation Subaru WRX STI”, including electrification.
Let’s just say that Subaru used to consider a WRX STI as a Subaru WRX STI Performance Concept. This was displayed at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2022. Let’s keep this in our heads.
