New spy photos have revealed that the next-gen Audi A4 Avant was performing brake tests in Austrian Alps. New photos show Audi concealing the wagon in a full-body camouflage wrap. However, as the launch date approaches, we are beginning to get more information about the new model.

The modified MLB platform underpinning other VW Group models will be the basis for the new . Audi has modified the platform to allow for an electric motor. The new A4 will be equipped with mild-hybrid assistance. Rumours also suggest that the automaker will use its turbocharged 2.0-liter four cylinder EA888 gasoline engine in model , which will get major upgrades. It will be available with an eight-speed manual or seven-speed dual clutch gearbox.

Audi will include in the A4 a variety of gasoline and diesel engines. However, we’ll also see them electrified. This includes full-electric and plug-in hybrids. Rumours abound about a hybrid RS4 with more power than the current model’s 331 kW (344 hp).

Our spy photographers claim that an all electric A4 E-Tron will be riding on the PPE platform, instead of the MLB. The EV will have unique front styling, such as a closed-off grille. The RS version will be available in single- or dual-motor configurations. It is said to deliver 475 horsepower (354 kilowatts), and 590 pound feet (800 Newton-meters) torque.

Although there may be some surprises under the hood, Audi’s exterior will not be surprising. Camouflage conceals many details of the car’s design, while the overall styling has significant changes. The whole face, including the grilles and headlights, looks smaller. Audi installed stand-in taillights at the rear. However, there isn’t much excitement back there.

Audi has not yet set a date for the debut of the new A4, which will be available in Avant and sedan body styles. We expect the reveal to take place in the latter part of this year or early next year. The car should be available for purchase sometime around 2023. Audi is working to become a fully-electric brand but it will still have gasoline engines for a few years.
