In the US, Q4 2022.

Since June 2020, the third-generation BMW X1 is in development. We saw the crossover test on public roads two years ago. The 2023 X1 is finally here. It features a new design, more technology, and a standard seven-speed dual clutch transmission mated with an xDrive all wheel drive. Let’s start with the exterior.

The 2023 model maintains the same basic proportions as its predecessor, but has a bolder front fascia with slightly larger radiator grilles that are almost square and prominent headlights. The standard features of the X1 include full LED lights at all four corners and a new profile for the taillights. The X1’s rear window is narrower and more rugged, with the flared wheel arches creating a wider visual effect. We expect similar design solutions on the XM SUV, which is the top-of-the-line SUV in Bavaria.

The new X1 is slightly larger than the predecessor, as is the case with all new cars. The length of the new X1 has increased by 1.7 in to 177.2 inches, and 0.9 in to its width of 72.6 inches. The new X1 measures 64.6 inches longer than the old X1. This is due to the larger dimensions which provide more space in the cabin and create a more square appearance overall. However, the drag coefficient is only 0.27. Track widths have been increased by 0.8 frontally and rearly.

The cabin can still accommodate five people, but BMW claims that the increased width gives the driver and front passenger more elbow and shoulder room. The biggest change in the interior’s design is the upgrade to BMW iDrive 8 infotainment system. This includes a pair of screens – a 10.25 inch instrument cluster and a 10.7 inch navigation display – all housed within a single glass. There’s also a large air vent, space for two cups holders, and a tray with a wireless charging station.

All trims include four USB-C ports and a 12-volt power socket in the cargo area and center console. There is also a Bluetooth interface. A Harman Kardon premium audio system, rated at 205 watts and featuring 12 speakers and tweeters built into the door trim, is also available. The interior-facing camera allows owners to send photos to their smartphone from the interior and can also be used to remotely check the car’s interior via the My BMW App.

The 2023 X1 has a single engine option in the USA. It is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo. It features a Miller combustion cycle, a dual direct and port injector system and produces a peak output power of 241 horsepower (177 Kilowatts) as well as 295 pound-feet (405 Newton-meters) of torque at 1,500 to 4,000 rpm. Standard equipment includes a seven speed dual-clutch transmission with an xDrive AWD system and a turbocharged unit. This setup allows for acceleration of 0-60 miles per hours (0-96 km/h) in 6.2 seconds.

M Sport Package vehicles come with steering wheel paddles that allow for “extremely quick manual gear changes.” The function unlocks the powertrain’s full potential by adjusting the settings to achieve the fastest acceleration.

BMW claims that almost all parts of the single-joint spring shaft front axle have been completely reengineered in comparison to the previous model. An optional adaptive M suspension, which lowers the ride height by 0.6%, is now available. Standard equipment includes modified steering with a higher rack ratio and more direct suspension.

The 2023 BMW X1 will be available in the United States during the fourth quarter. It will be offered in xDrive28i guise and a starting price at $38,600, plus $995 delivery.
