Safety and technology upgrades are also included.

While the Toyota GR Corolla is the most popular addition to the Corolla’s lineup, the automaker also has some interesting upgrades available for more basic versions. A more powerful hybrid system is leading the pack, as well as an all-wheel drive option and a new combustion engine.

The Corolla’s most popular trim, the LE, has a 2.0-liter gasoline engine that produces 169 horsepower. This replaces the previous 1.8-liter four cylinder with 139 horses. This new engine is nearly two times more efficient than the previous 1.8-liter four-cylinder. All 2023 Corolla models that have a gas engine are equipped with a CVT. This allows paddle shifters to select from 10 preset gear ratios in the SE or XSE grades.

However, the most important news is the hybrid all-wheel drive powertrain. The rear-mounted electric motor powers the rear wheels. Toyota does not disclose the output figures, but Toyota claims that the system engages its rear-mounted electric motor to respond to slippage at front and also to improve cornering and reduce understeer.

The 2023 Corolla Hybrid has a 1.8-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder gasoline engine. A new motor with a redesigned magnet configuration and electromagnetic steel plate arrangement has been added. For a lower center-of-gravity, the lithium-ion battery is now under the rear seat. The Corolla Hybrid LE FWD trim was discontinued. Four new hybrid models were added for the 2023 model year: LE AWD SE SE AWD SE AWD SE AWD and XLE.

All 2023 Corolla models come standard with Toyota’s 8.-inch infotainment system. It includes over-the-air updates and voice activation, as well as a cloud-based navigational system. A JBL premium audio system, with nine speakers, and an 800-watt amplifier, is available as an option on the Corolla SE and XSE. The optional equipment includes leather upholstery, ambient lighting and a wireless charging pad for your phone.

Toyota has introduced version 3.0 to its Toyota Safety Sense safety technology family. This version now features enhanced versions of lane departure alert with steering assist, adaptive cruise controller, road sign assistance, road signal assist, road sign help, automatic high beams, precollision alarm with pedestrian detection, lane tracing aid, and lane sign assist. A parking camera and front and rear parking sensors are also available on the 2023 Corolla.
