Check out how the hot hatch handles wet tracks.
The 2023 Toyota GR Corolla hot hatch is one of the most anticipated. Motor1.com was recently able to take a shotgun ride in one with Ryan Tuerck, a professional drifter, around Eagles Canyon Raceway near Decatur Texas.
This is the GR Corolla Circuit Edition. It features components such as a forged carbon fiber roof and Torsen limited slip differentials at both wheels. Tuerck chooses the 50-50 torque split, and activates the Intelligent Manual Transmission. This rev matches downshifts.
While we ride, it is raining. Although these aren’t ideal conditions for setting a fast lap in, it is a chance to test the GR-Four all wheel-drive system with the slick conditions. Although Tuerck does not push the Corolla too much, there are some thrilling moments.
The GR Corolla is powered by the G16E–GTS 1.6-liter turbocharged, three-cylinder engine. It produces 300 horsepower (224 kilowatts), and 273 poundfeet (373 Newton-meters). Only one gearbox is available: the six-speed manual. For the GR-Four all wheel-drive system, the driver has three options for front-rear torque splits: 60-40, 50-50 and 30-70.
Toyota has yet to specify the acceleration time and top speed of the GR Corolla.
This hot hatch also features additional welding points and structural adhesive. Aluminum is used for the hood and front doors. The car is equipped with 18-inch wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires.
Although the GR Corolla has yet to go on sale, Toyota is already announcing a more extreme Morizo Edition. The engine produces 295 lb-ft (400 nm) and has a shorter gearing. This model is lighter than the Circuit Edition by removing the rear seats, speakers and window regulators as well as the entire rear wiper system. It weighs in at 3,186 pounds (1.445 kg).
Toyota will only make 200 copies of the Morizo Edition in 2023. Pricing for the models, including the entry-level model, is not yet available. The GR Corolla will go on sale in the latter part of this year. In 2023, the Circuit and Morizo Editions will join the range.
