The little Golf that could.
This is the ultimate German small-car drag race. There are many products from German automakers so there is something for everyone. Today, we will see if the new Volkswagen Golf R can compete with more expensive competitors in drag racing. Carwow sent a team to drag race with all of its competitors.
The MK8 VW GolfR is a new model for the 2022 model-year. It builds on the lessons learned from previous generations. A 2.0-liter inline-4 produces 315 horsepower (234 Kilowatts), and 295 lbft (400 Newton meters) of torque. The powerful engine can be mated to either an automatic 6-speed transmission or a dual-clutch 7-speed automatic. The latter is faster during acceleration testing. The automatic Golf R can accelerate from 0-60 in just 4.7 seconds, making it an excellent family car.
Carwow has assembled a formidable team to take on the new fancy Golf. The Audi RS3 is powered by a turbocharged Inline-5 engine and Quattro all wheel-drive. This makes it a formidable competitor to supercars in acceleration runs. The AMG A45, or Mercedes-AMG’s nuclear-powered hot-hat, is next. It boasts one the most powerful inline-4 engine ever made. The BMW M2 is the next car in our lineup. It’s one of BMW’s most iconic driver’s cars. The Porsche Cayman GTS will show the competition that sports cars still have a place in drag racing.
Can the Golf R keep up with these tough competitors? This group of strong competitors will be tough to beat, but we’ll find out.
